MUCHEA SHEEP AND LAMB REPORT 19/03/2024
Total Yarding: 9,469 Sheep 4,302 - Lambs 5,167

Today's sale was down by 1500 from last week however lamb supplies increased substantially with aged sheep numbers falling back. The sale mainly consisted of reasonable supplies of lambs showing weight and finish along with large drafts of Merino lambs and big lines of Merino Mutton. Most of the regular buyers were in attendance along with a return of a mayor feedlot buyer adding competition on the lighter end of the trade weight lambs.

Both Cross-Bred and Merino store lambs eased $4/5 with Cross-Breds selling from $13 to $70 and Merinos from $16 to $55/head. light lambs held firm making $48 to $89 while trade lambs gained $5 returning $70 to $115 and heavy lambs sold to a top of $125/head.

Demand from Live shipping eased however Merino wether hoggets with condition remained firm selling from $39 to $69 while Merino ewe hoggets returned $20 to $59 and Crossbred hoggets sold to a top of $62/head.

Although light and very plain mutton sold at minimal values demand for heavier framed boner ewes lifted $3/5 ranging from $5 to $25/head. Medium and heavy ewes regardless of weight returned $20 to $45 remaining equal while Mature rams sold from $5 to $64/head.

Numbers almost halved today mostly due to weather conditions with to much rain and flooding in some areas and not enough in others as well as some local areas already finished clearing stock for this season. The buyer gallery was well attended with all regulars present and the lack of numbers seemed to increased demand with many categories gaining today.

Vealer steers lifted 5/10c ranging from 220c to 300c while vealer heifers remained firm selling from 120c to 210c/kg. Yearling steers gained 20c with quality also playing a part returning 222c to 306c and the same for yearling heifers making 150c to 276c/kg. Light weight pastoral steer calves in plain condition started at 74c up to 266c with better potential and pastoral heifers from 50c up to 208c in better condition.

Grown steers showing excellent weight and finish enjoyed higher values selling from 150c to 298c while grown heifers remained firm making 146c to 200c/kg. Light weight cows gained 10c making 100c to 152c while medium cows were equal selling from 130c to 160c and heavy cows also equal realizing 196c/kg.

Shipping bulls remained firm and ranged from 148c to 232c while slaughter bulls lifted 5/10c selling up to 218c/kg.

Total Yarding: 10,977 Sheep 7,699 - Lambs 3,278

Numbers increased to over 10,000 this week mainly due to large drafts of Merino wethers and mutton while lamb supplies remained similar. There were limited lines of heavy lambs however trade lambs were in reasonable supply against the high volume of store lambs. Although nowhere near full most of the regular buyers were operating and this week several eastern states buyers where occasionally bidding on selected large lines of store lambs and hoggets.

Store lambs remained buoyant with plainer types starting from $10 and with better potential up to $71/head while Merino wether lambs penned in large lines returned $30 to $65/head. Light airfreight lambs held firm selling from $45 to $92 while trade lambs slipped $8/$10 making $70 to $108 and heavy lambs also back $10 with the best lambs reaching $118/head.

Merino wether hoggets showing condition were making $35 to $66 while Merino ewe hoggets returned $28 to $51 with a skin and Crossbred hoggets sold to a top of $92/head.

Mutton remained equal with Boners starting at $1 up to $18 while medium ewes sold to $30 and averaged $26/head. Heavy ewes sold to a top of $57 and rams still making $5 to $28/head.

MUCHEA CATTLE REPORT 11/03/2024
Total Yarding 1,159

Numbers were back up to around 1200 head at Muchea today. The sale consisted of large runs of local yearling and weaner steers and heifers, Pastoral export bulls and cows in all weight ranges. The buyer gallery was missing several regulars and very light on with restockers so as a result calves lacking frame and condition sold to cheaper rates while calves showing better fat cover gained along with prime cows and slaughter bulls.

Plain and light weaner steer values dropped by 20c ranging from 106c to 200c while heavier steers in slaughter or feeder condition lifted selling up to 290c and averaged 246c/kg. The same with light weaner heifers dropping 15/20c with some calves starting at 30c up to 180c and with more fat cover from 186c to 238c/kg. Light yearling steers under 280kg eased 15c but over 280kg gained up to 25c selling to a top of 284c and averaged 245c/kg. Many plainer yearling heifers started at 50c up to 140c and over 280kg remained firm selling from 120c to 222c/kg.

Grown steers gained slightly mainly due to quality and returned 118c to 240c and the same with grown heifers selling from 158c to 224c/kg. Feeder cows ranged from 50c and with better potential up to 142c while medium weights from 130c to 178c and prime cows gained 15c topping out at 196c to average 175c/kg.

Export bulls lost ground with some exporters operating minimally selling to a top 236c however slaughter bulls enjoyed higher values topping out at 206c to average 170c/kg.

Total Yarding: 7,262 Sheep 3,587 - Lambs 3,675

Numbers almost halved today which is usual on the long weekends at this time of the year. Lambs across the board recovered from last weeks drop in pricing while older sheep remain equal. There were reasonable supplies of lambs showing weight and finish along with good quality hoggets chasing support from the eastern states buyer making reasonable money in the current climate.

lambs bounced back with store lambs selling from $10 to $70 while Airfreight lambs were making $58 to $95/head. Trade lambs returned $82 to $127 and heavy lambs sold up to $132/head.

The best of the Merino wether hoggets realized $56 while the best Merino ewe hoggets returned $40 and Crossbred hoggets sold to $67/head.

Plain boner ewes were hard selling with many going for $2 but with better frames making up to $20 while medium ewes up to $30 and heavy ewes returned $47 with a fleece.

Mature rams were firm selling from $5 to $41/head.
